This application is for any graduate student who previously pursued a degree at Howard University and has had a break in their enrollment at Howard. Generally, Former Students Returning (FSR) are readmitted to the most recent graduate degree program in which they were enrolled at Howard University. Graduate students seeking readmission should submit the application by dates specified below (please check with your graduate program to ensure that there is a summer re-admit process):December 31, 2023 (Spring 2024) April 20, 2024 (Summer 2024) July 31, 2024 (Fall 2024)
Before readmission is granted, students who are absent from the University for the following reasons must fulfill the below requirements by the application deadline.
NOTE: Graduate students who have failed the comprehensive/qualifying examination twice or have failed a thesis or dissertation defense twice are not eligible for readmittance. There are no exceptions.
Continuing graduate students who wish to continue studies for a later entering semester must complete the former student returning application process as outlined above. Students are classified as continuing students if they have earned grades in prior semesters at the university, or (for new entrant students) if they were enrolled by the final enrollment census date for the given entry semester.
Incoming new entrant students who withdraw during their first semester prior to the final enrollment census for that semester (generally in October for Fall entrants & March for Spring entrants - see the University Calendar) must submit a new application for admission; they would not be eligible to submit a returning student application. As such, a student who withdraws prior to the add/drop deadline for the respective entry semester is not eligible to submit a returning student application.
A graduate student enrolled in any of the graduate degree programs whose cumulative grade point average is less than 3.0 at the end of the first semester or any subsequent semester will incur academic probation.
A student who falls below the 3.00 GPA must raise the quality point index to 3.00 in the next term in residence. Students failing to do so will be suspended.
A graduate student may earn no more than two grades below a B-. If a student earns three grades below a B-, the student will be dismissed from the Graduate School.
A student who demonstrates an inability to perform satisfactorily at the graduate level should be recommended for dismissal.
1. Students on probation must adhere to the following conditions for continued enrollment:
2. Enroll in a maximum of 12 credit hours if full-time, and a minimum of 4 credit hours if part-time (Note: Students must also, if applies, check with their lending institutions to determine full-time and part-time load status. It is the student’s responsibility to be responsive and adhere to the requirement(s) of the lending institution regarding student load).
3. Establish and maintain contact with their designated graduate program chair/director of graduate studies/faculty advisor for academic advising, counseling, assistance, and referral to support services at least once per month.
4. Probationary status will be removed when the student has achieved a cumulative average of at least 3.0.
5. Probationary status must be removed within one semester, exclusive of summer sessions, or the student will incur suspension.
6. Any student who voluntarily withdraws or has been on probation, suspended or dismissed from the University will be subject to stipulations as a condition for readmission. All stipulations as noted are expected to be addressed and completed.
